Run From Away: Gander’s First Marathon Honors a Legacy of Kindness
In May 2026, Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador, will host its first-ever
marathon and half marathon—an event unlike any other, rooted in compassion,
history, and the power of community.
Organized by the YQX Running Club, the RUN FROM AWAY Marathon & Half
Marathon takes place May 23rd and invites runners to trace a path through
one of the world’s most remarkable stories of generosity. The race begins on the
tarmac of Gander International Airport, where, on September 11, 2001, 38
planes carrying nearly 7,000 stranded passengers landed when U.S. airspace
was closed.
From there, the course winds through Downtown Gander, past landmarks made
famous by the Broadway musical Come From Away, including the Tim Hortons
where locals organized updates, the Steele Community Centre repurposed as a
giant refrigerator, and the Town Hall, now home to a piece of World Trade
Center steel.
A highlight of the route is Cobbs Pond Rotary Park, the setting of a real-life
romance between two stranded travelers who met during those fateful days.
Runners will finish at the new Gander Track & Field Facility, where the idea for
this commemorative race first began.
Whether you’re a seasoned marathoner or running your first half, this is more
than just a race. It’s a journey through a town that opened its arms to the
world and changed countless lives in the process.
Come run where kindness made headlines. Come Run From Away.
